Overview

This scrapbook is made up of papers removed from a blue binder embossed with “LWN,” which was dismantled for preservation purposes. The collection mostly consists of photocopies of newspaper clippings detailing Nesmith’s athletic career in high school and college, his career as a doctor of ophthalmology, and his death in a private plane crash. Transcripts and programs from his memorial service are also included.

Biography of Leslie Nesmith (1940-1998)

Leslie W. Nesmith was born to Dean D. and Norma R. Wallace Nesmith in 1940. His father, Dean Nesmith, was a Kansas and National Hall of Fame athletic trainer at the University of Kansas from 1938-1983.

Leslie Nesmith graduated from Lawrence High School in 1958 and earned a bachelor’s degree from KU in 1962, graduating from the KU Medical School in 1966. He was a captain in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, receiving a commendation medal in 1968. Nesmith completed his ophthalmology residency in 1971 and received a fellowship at Harvard under Dr. Charles Schepens, an innovator of modern retinal surgery. Dr. Nesmith returned to Kansas to become a renowned ophthalmologist in Wichita.

Dr. Nesmith sang and played guitar as a member of the Augusta First United Methodist Church and enjoyed flying helicopters and planes. He died in a nighttime crash of his own plane in 1998, along with Phil DuPont, a flight safety instructor. Nesmith was survived by his children, Trent, Brooke, Seth, Britt, Luke, and Cade.
