Biography of Alfred Mossman Landon
Alf Landon was the unsuccessful Republican candidate for the U.S. presidency in 1936. Before that presidential campaign, Landon was governor of Kansas from 1933 to 1936; he was a prominent Kansas Republican for much of his life. For a biography of Landon, see Donald R. Scope and Contents
This collection of speeches, correspondence, pamphlets, clippings, and miscellaneous memorabilia was collected by McCoy as a result of his research for the biography Landon of Kansas. Although most of the material relates to the unsuccessful campaign for the presidency in 1936, other materials, including letters, speeches, and clippings date from 1927 to 1963.
Also included in the collection are 125 pamphlets published by the Republican Party in support of the Landon presidential campaign.
The collection is arranged chronologically by type of format - speeches, pamphlets, correspondence, and clippings, in six boxes. Individuals who appear in the collection include U.S. Presidents John F. Kennedy, Dwight David Eisenhower, Harry S. Truman, and Herbert Hoover; as well as Thomas Edmund Dewey, Felix Frankfurter, Paul Harvey, Harold LeClaire Ickes, Walter Lippmann, Ralph Emerson McGill, Hans Morganthau, Robert A. Taft, and William Allen White.
Audiovisual materials, including a copy of a film and some audio recordings, have been physically separated from the rest of the collection and are stored in offsite storage.
