John Whitwell (1812-1880), a carpet manufacturer and 6-time mayor of Kendal, thanks Alderman Fischer for sending copies of Joseph Mayer's addresses to the members of the Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire. He asks Fisher to let Mayer know that he is indebted to him for his publication.

Joseph Mayer (1803-1886), a collector of antiquities and art, explains that while in the other seasons he has been able to provide free flowers to the readers of the Free Library, in winter the poem by Moore about the last rose of summer will have to suffice until the next spring.
