Chart of "Line of Batle [sic]" with instructions for communication by signals, sent by Vice-Admiral Sir Stafford Fairborne, commanding twelve Royal Navy ships in the North Atlantic off Kingsale, Ireland, to Captain Miles [i.e. Josian Mighells] in preparation for British battle with French ships during the Spanish War of Succession. Written aboard the HMS Medway in the North Atlantic, off the coast of Kingsale, Ireland.

This collection consists of a single legal document in the form of a letter: appointment as ship's master. Order by Churchill, as Admiral of the Blue Squadron of the English Navy, directed to Mr John Mullett (who is fit to serve as Master of any of HM ships of the third rate) to repair to HMS Sommersett and take charge of her as Master (under a Captain), "for which this shall be your Warrant." "By the Honoble Geo: Churchill...Whereas I am inform'd of your ability..."
