Items removed from Volumes I-II of “The Tall Four”, 1861-1865, undated
Scope and Contents
Various items were found inside the "Tall Four" volumes. On the first page of the first volume there was a half-page legal pad note from Mary Gillispie Youngkin, whose estate donated the volumes, to a Dr. Huntress, and a response from him on the other side suggesting that she preserve it carefully as it may be the first novel written in Kansas.
Other items include a blue ribbon that says “Reunion Soldiers of the Peace. Rebellion. U.S. Veterans, War of 1861 to 1865. Shiloh, Vicksburg, Atlanta Sherman’s March Across to the Sea. A Happy Nation” found between pages 6 and 7; pressed vines found between pages 136-137 and 162-163; newspaper clippings found between pages 652-653, possibly from the St. Joseph Herald showing Chapter XXII of “Unfortunate Entanglements” in one column (the second column is not contiguous); a long newspaper clipping portion of the novel; and a movie program for Ben-Hur.
The loose newspaper clippings are photocopies, and the two plant pressings have been placed in an envelope.
