Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence to and from Howe dating from 1908 to 1933. Among his correspondents were H. L. Mencken, Clayton Hoagland, Corra Harris, Charles Sumner Finch (1856-1934), George H. Lormier, John Davison Rockefeller, William Allen White, and A. B. McDonald, editor of the Kansas City Star in the 1930s. The correspondence with McDonald constitutes the bulk of the letters.

There are also letters written to Howe's sons, Eugene (1886-1952) and James P. (1879-1971), and to Adelaide, his niece, by Mrs. Don Carlos Guffy of Kansas City, Missouri in an attempt to recover a book following Howe's death that she believed was hers and that she considered valuable. There is photographic memorabilia dating about 1932-1933, as well as three photographs stored separately at RH MS-P P35.

Most of the letters and photographic material have been detached from a makeshift scrapbook in which they were pasted on both sides of the sheet. In two instances the chronological sequence of the letters is disrupted.
