Overview

Edgar Watson Howe (1854-1937) was editor of E. W. Howe's Monthly and the Atchison (Kan.) Globe, as well as author of numerous books and articles. This collection contains correspondence to and from Howe dating from 1908 to 1933 and photographs of him, family members, and A.B. McDonald.

Overview In this collection are books inscribed in the 1920s by William Allen White to Phyllis A. Hughes (Mrs. Keith) Lawton, whose father Bowmer Q. Hughes worked for thirty years as a linotype operator for White's Emporia Gazette. Overview The Emporia Gazette (Emporia, Kansas) began publication in 1890. From 1895 to 1944, the newspaper gained national prominence under its owner and editor, William Allen White, which was sustained under his son William Lindsay White's leadership from 1944 to 1973. The William Allen White Collection contains correspondence and writings by and about native Kansan William Allen White, whose grass roots social and political editorials as editor of the Emporia Gazette earned him a Pulitzer Prize and international fame. Included in the collection, acquired by the William Allen White School of Journalism and Public Information at the University of Kansas, are many photographs of White and his associates.
