Custodial History

In 1880 certain state papers belonging to the Montagu family, dukes of Manchester, were deposited in the English Public Record Office as P.R.O. 30/15, and known as the Manchester Papers. These manuscripts covered the 16th through 18th centuries. The Public Records Office numbered and described each item, and published the description as Historical Manuscripts Commission Report 8A part II.

In the 1960s the family withdrew the deposit and began to dispose of the manuscripts separately.

In August 1977 the Kenneth Spencer Research Library acquired a miscellaneous group of manuscripts from the bookseller Theodore Hofmann. Among those were a few Manchester Papers, recognisable by being docketed in red crayon with the item number assigned by the Public Records Office.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Purchased from Hofmann, August 17, 1977; donated by Helen Foresman Spencer.

Bibliography

Item 1 published in Masson, Quarrel, 1875 (Camden Society, s.2 v.12). Both items mentioned in Historical Manuscripts Commission Report 8A part II p. 62a.
