This collection consists of diaries and their transcripts, military letters of appointment, correspondence, writings, and other materials kept by James W. Jessee, a farmer who lived in both Douglas and Osage Counties, Kansas and McClean County, Illinois. The most substantive part of the collection are his diaries from his time serving in the American Civil War with the 8th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
James William Denver letters
This collection consists of official letters to and from James Denver during his military service in the Mexican-American War, as well as personal letters to Denver's brother Arthur of Platte City, Missouri; his sister Elizabeth A. Johns of Wilmington, Ohio; and his wife Louise Catherine Denver of Wilmington, OH. These latter letters were written while he was serving as governor of the Kansas Territory.

James William Gambier logbook
One logbook with logs of two voyages in the ships Sylvia and Ellborough. Both logs have been kept in the same volume, reading from opposite ends in reverse directions. Voyages were between England and off the coasts of China and Japan. One voyage took place from Hongkong to England via the Cape of Good Hope.

James William Lucas Heaviside (1808-1897), a clergyman and professor of mathematics located in England (London?), writes to "My dear Donaldson," enclosing his remarks on the progress of a student (not included in Spencer Research Library's collection), and requests that Donaldson have the Registrar send him a cheque that is payable in London.
James Wright Johnston family papers
James Wright Johnston, a Pennsylvania lawyer and banker, emigrated to Lawrence, Kansas in 1872, where he founded the State Bank of Lawrence, and was succeeded as bank president by his son, Robert Cromwell Johnston. These papers include biographical sketches of the father and son, correspondence and photographs of their Johnston family members of Lawrence, and family letters and career documents of J. W. Johnston's father, the Reverend Robert Johnston of Indiana County, Pennsylvania.
Jan Meyers political papers
Jan Meyers represented Kansas in the United States House of Representatives and the Kansas Legislature. This collection documents her participation in both legislatures. Meyers was city councilwoman in Overland Park from 1967-1972, served as a senator in the Kansas Legislature from 1972-1984, and was a Republican congresswoman from 1985-1997.
Jane Comstock Clarke collection
The Jane Comstock Clarke collection consists of a Clarke family photo album and loose family photographs, along with a few cards sent by Clarke and some news clippings from Honolulu, Hawaii newspapers about the poetry that Clarke published there using the pen name Jane Comstock.
Jane van Meter collection
The bulk of the Jane van Meter collection is correspondence, mostly letters from Sylvia Beach, who was owner of the Shakespeare and Company Bookstore in Paris, France and for whom van Meter was an assistant. Identification documents, notecards from van Meter's studies at the Sorbonne, personally inscribed books, and photographs of van Meter in Paris and later in life on the campus of the University of Kansas in Lawrence make up the rest of the collection.
Jane Wofford Malin collection
Jane Wofford Malin grew up in Lawrence, Kansas, had a career teaching French in Texas, and then retired to her home town of Lawrence, Kansas. This collection documents her life and her connections to Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Texas, and in France and abroad. The correspondence in this collection, as well as papers and photographs of Malin and each of her parents, represents two generations of Midwestern life.
Jarboe family papers
The Jarboe family papers, dating from 1865 to the 1950s, document the history of an upperclass, educated family over a period of three generations. The family lived throughout Kansas and Oklahoma and were involved in banking, the mercantile business, farming, and gold prospecting.

This collection contains various records from the Jayhawk Audubon Society, such as financial statements, club calendars, charters, newspaper clippings, membership lists, program agendas and correspondence.
