Elizabeth Miller Watkins, 1889 - 1946

 Series
Call Number: RH MS 1

Scope and Contents

Elizabeth Miller Watkins was alternatively clerk, agent, confidante, wife, sole executor and heir to J. B. Watkins. She assumed command of his affairs after his death in 1921, keeping the business directed in those specific areas that she and J. B. Watkins had planned until her death in 1939.

This series contains Elizabeth Watkins' handwritten personal correspondence from 1902-1938 to her various managers. Incoming letters from them can be found in the Lawrence office series. The majority of the correspondence is devoted to her many philanthropical labors and has been separated by subject in chronological order. The projects include the designing, building and furnishing of two hospitals, several dormitories and scholarship halls, as well as the donation of her residence, known as the Outlook, to the University of Kansas. Some projects include detailed expense records, specifications and/or floor plans.

Related Materials

Watkins' correspondence could not be completely separated from the general business flow, for she was integrally involved there as well. Consequently, those letters concerning her role as executrix of J. B. Watkins' estate, the administration of her household staff, and her numerous bequests to individuals remain in the Lawrence office series of the collection. At her death in 1939, her business manager, Dick Williams, was appointed executor of her estate. Materials regarding her will and the administration of her large estate can be found in the "Elizabeth M. Watkins Estate" subject folders in the Lawrence series.

The Kansas University Archives houses some of the original blue-prints for the Watkins Memorial Hospital, now Twente Hall on the KU campus. In addition, Architectural Services maintains current plans and blueprints of most campus buildings, including those built by Elizabeth M. Watkins.
