County files, 1901 - 1943

 Series
Call Number: RH MS 1

Scope and Contents

This series is comprised of correspondence, papers, and other materials that pertain to county-wide land ownership and/or management concerns of the Watkins Land Mortgage and Watkins Land Companies. The materials are arranged by state and county in alphabetical order and date from the 1890s to the 1940s. The correspondence reflects the activities of Watkins' land managers until 1939. After this date, Williams continued to manage his land as well as the former Watkins lands that were bequested to the Kansas University Endowment Association.

The county files contain correspondence with land agents, lawyers, bankers, county officials, and farm tenants on Watkins-owned farms in Colorado, Kansas and Texas. One feature of the series is correspondence dated from 1909 to 1940 between the manager of the Morton County Ranch and the Lawrence office. This ranch, also known as the Western Kansas Camp, served as a headquarters and base camp for Watkins' various economic and agricultural development activities in southwestern Kansas.
