One original black and white photographic print and three later copies of a child, Alberta White, standing in front of the house located at 724 Alabama Street in Lawrence, Kansas. The house is thought to have been where Mary Patterson Langston, Langston Hughes' grandmother, lived, though the 1907 and 1911 Lawrence city directories list her address as 732 Alabama.

The photographs were taken by U.S. Navy Air Base of Olathe personnel, unit NA87-2098-7-51, but it is unclear who captioned the original album (a volunteer from the air base?). Descriptions in this finding aid make use of those captions.

"A groan from the lobby of the Old Bailey"
The verse, "A groan from the lobby of the Old Bailey", tells of the difficulty of dealing with the crowds and being allowed to enter the courtroom at the Old Bailey in London, England. Penciled notes on the leaf attribute the verse to Captain William Dawes Malton (flourished 1856-1884) and ascribe the occasion as the trial of Palmer. Malton, a military man and author, probably wrote this verse on the occasion of the trial of Samuel Palmer in May 1856.
